This off-season the Sound Tigers added a tremendous amount of toughness to their lineup with various acquisitions, but few can strike fear into an opponent's eyes like Kip Brennan. Brennan was signed by the Islanders this off-season and has played this season with the Sound Tigers, compiling 103 penalty minutes in 14 games. He also set a record for most penalty minutes in a game with 45 in a game against the Hershey Bears. On the ice Brennan is an intimidating force but we took some time, fortunately off the ice, to talk with him.
Living in California, what are some of the things you like to do in the off-season?
Since the Los Angeles Kings drafted me, I've had my summer home out there. It is just such a beautiful place and the atmosphere is incredible with the beach and nightlife. I love kite surfing. It is when there is a rope going from the board to the kite in the sky. The kites range from 12 to 20 feet. I play in a couple of beach volleyball tournaments with my good friends who live in that area as well.
Obviously fighting is a big part of your game. What goes through your mind when you are about to drop the gloves with an opponent?
I try not to think about it. It has always been a part of my game growing up and it is something I have become good at. My job is to bring a physical presence to the team to free up space for the pure scorers. The toughest guy that I ever fought was without a doubt Georges Laraque. I've had a lot of good fights with Derek Boogaard.
Who was your favorite player growing up as a child?
Cam Neely, without a doubt. The way that guy played going out and scoring 50 goals and fighting whoever got in his way is the exact way I try to model my play. I know I'm not a goal scorer but it is always fun to pitch in offensively. Scoring that goal earlier this season was exciting especially since it was on the power-play. Colliton fed a nice behind the pack pass to me in front. He made the pretty play, I just finished it.
What is your hockey superstition?
I have to always be the last one off the ice after the periods.
What is your pet peeve?
Traffic and there is a ton of it here and in L.A.
If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
The Dali-Lama. The guy has the answers to everything.
Drew Fata's description of what it is like fighting Brennan:
When we were both playing in the Ontario Hockey League (Junior Hockey), Kip was playing for Sudbury and I was with St. Michaels. He laid a big hit on one of my teammates in the corner. I skated over to Kip and before I knew it he had a clench hold on the front of my jersey and was asking me what I was going to do. Since I was only 17 and Kip was 21, I chose the smart decision and skated away.
