UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP)—Trent Hunter signed a five-year, $10 million contract extension with the New York Islanders on Friday.
Hunter will earn $2 million per season through 2012-13. He is making $1.55 million this season and was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The Islanders completed the deal ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
“This is what I was determined to see happen all along—a long-term deal,” Hunter said in a release. “The contract got done today with a lot of respect and class shown on both sides, so now it’s back to the race for the playoffs.”
Hunter has eight goals and 32 points in 62 games this season for the Islanders, who have won six straight and entered Friday’s games a point out of the final playoff spot in the East.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound winger has 157 points (69 goals) in 306 NHL games, all with New York. He was drafted by Anaheim in the in the sixth round (150th overall) in 1998 and traded to New York in 2000.
“We’ve said it a lot this season: Trent Hunter is the kind of player and person we want as a core player for the New York Islanders,” Islanders GM Garth Snow said in a release. “Our team theme this season is heart, grit and character and that’s a perfect description of Trent.

Excellent... I guess we're not trading him. Hunter is a great player. Wish we had 19 more guys just like him.
