Isles and Bruins institute a new rule on fighting for rookie games. Rest....I still expect Alex O'Neil and Lane MacDermid to dance tonight.

My thoughts...
First the fights:
Travis Hamonic vs Antoine Roussel
Hamonic was trying to get Roussel to fight a few times in the first period but to no avail. I saw him tap him with his stick quite a few times while lined up for faceoffs. Finally Hamonic took a shot at Roussel in the corner and quickly tried to get the upper hand. Not much going on here as Hamonic fell pretty early in the fight. But while on the ice, the refs had a hard time separating them.
Alex O'Neil vs Ryan Donald
Best fight of the night with O'Neil (told you about this kid!) at one point dropping Donald with a punch. Donald quickly gotback up and tried to hang in there, but this was a clear win for O'Neil. Donald was left bloody and did not return the rest of the period.
Nino Niederreiter vs Tyler Randell
Randell jumped Nino after he tried to get in between Randell and David Ullstrom. Nino was taken off guard as Randelll dropped his gloves and started whaling away on Nino. For some reason (other than he wanted no part of the fight) Nino kept his gloves on almost the entire fight, even waiting to drop his stick at the very end. Nino definitely got 5 minutes for receiving.
Tony DeHart vs Matt Delahey
This one started when Isles Steve Tarasuk an Antoine Roussel got into a shoving match while lining up for a faceoff. Roussel challenged Tarasuk and it looked like he agreed. Roussel dropped his gloves only to see Tarasuk skate away. Matt Delahey skated over to hit Tarasuk against the boards and then he dropped his gloves. Again Tarasuk skated away.
DeHart then came over and dropped them with Delahey and he fell almost instantly.
The DiBo incident
A lot of different opinions out there on this one but here's what I saw. Apparently Tony Romano was initially given this penalty but it was changed to DiBenedetto. What I saw was the Islander player take a run at Bruins player Lane MacDermid. I'm not saying DiBo led with his elbow or not, but MacDermid is a big boy and Dibo had to have hit him up high. The thing is, MacDermid saw him coming and kind of absorbed the hit, but in turn lost his stick. I believe the stick came up and hit Joe Colbourne in the face, thus cutting him. Colbourne was down for quite a while and was a bloody mess. He had to be assisted off the ice by the trainer and two players as he was "out on his feet" as they say.
The bad blood in this game will most likely spill over to tonights game, where the two fight limit will surely knock out a few players for the rest of the game.
Guys who were noticeable:
Nino (obviously) he played well in all three zones and was wide open for the tip of Hamonic's point shot for the Isles first goal. Obviously he shouldn't be fighting, and someone should have stepped in there so that the team's star player wasn't getting pounded like hat.
David Ullstrom was all over the ice. I didn't like his faceoff w/l ratio but he was quick on his feet and his forechecking was excellent. He looks like he's grasping Gordon's system well. We should see him in a few preseason games this year.
Rhett Rakhashani finished off that top line nd while the whole line played great, he also excelled with his speed and forechecking ability. I didn't notice his get too many offensive chances, but he didn't look like he made too mny mistakes which was a good thing.
Casey Cizikas is one of my favorites. He hits hard and is all over the ice. The guy just makes plays and more importantly, creates turnovers. The kid is fast and is another great forechecker and penalty killer. I think he just got caught playing on a dead line, as he was the only one who seemed to have life at times.
Alex O'Neil gets the mention just because he took hte team on his back and knocked out Ryan Donald, thus igniting a fire under a dead Islanders team. He didn't get a lot of playing time but he definitely made his presence known.
Travis Hamonic got a bad rap in my opinion. A lot of people said he played terrible, and although he wasn't a superstar out there, he showed flashes of what he will become. He jumped into the play at smart times, took good shots and made some big hits. His turnover late in the game led to a goal but you could see that his game is a bit rusty and he'll be just fine once he gets things going.
Kirill Kabanov in my opinion was not good at all. Despite what I heard about his playing well, he was invisible for half the game. The only time he woke up was towards the end where he tried to kill a Boston player (after the Nino fight.) He tried to do too much and his flash was not fooling anyone. He was hit off the puck by the much bigger Bruins defenseman and didnt create as much offense as I thought he would. This was obviously not the same player I saw back in the rookie scrimmage in July.
Corey Syvret played fantastic in the first period. He it guys hard and played sound defense. i tweeted that he looked like he wanted to get an invite to main camp but then disappeared the rest of the game. Maybe I jinxed him.
Robin Figren played well, but not great. He as also mostly invisible and although he did score a nice goal, he had an okay night as far as I'm concerned.
Calvin de Haan will also be just fine. I thought he also had flashes of greatness at times. He wasn't totally invisible but there were times where I would forget he was out there or not notice him at all. But that could have been because I was watching Hamonic instead.
Mark Katic was probably your bets defenseman tonight. The kid skates like no one I've ever seen. I know he's small, but he's smart on the ice and smart with the puck. Made some really nice plays tonight.
Anton Klementyev was probably one of the worst players on the ice tonight. Too many turnovers, bad passes and miscues. He did not have a good game.
Justin DIBenedetto just does not do anything for me. I watched him for 40 some odd games last year and he's still the same player. Yeah, he'll go in the corner, he'll flush out the occasional puck, he'll skate hard for a shift and then he just disappears. He's lazy, does not get back in the play and looks like he can't skate that well. He's the "same old DiBo" as us Soundtiger fans call him.
The rest of the players really weren't bad nor good in terms of me noticeing them. I was hoping to hear more of DeHart's name out there but I didn't. I was looking for him to be a bit more physical than he was and Romano was just a disappointment.
I'll be tweeting updates and observations from my seast behind the Isles bench once again tonight. Follow me at twitter.com/Islesenforcers
