D Allan Rourke Recalled From Bridgeport
Radek Martinek, arguably the Islanders' best defenseman this season, will be out of action for four weeks after suffering a broken bone in his foot during the team's 2-0 win over the Rangers on Tuesday night at the Coliseum. To replace him in the lineup, the Islanders recalled defenseman Allan Rourke on an emergency basis from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League. Rourke will wear No. 38 for the Islanders.
"Radek has been a warrior for us, maybe our most consistent defenseman," said Islanders coach Ted Nolan. "It says a lot about him that he continued to play during the Rangers game and the whole game the next night in Ottawa because he didn't want to take himself out of the lineup. But this is the right thing for him. As much as we'll miss Radek and we know how much he hates being out, we look forward to getting Radek back at 100 per cent."
In 29 games for the Sound Tigers this season, Rourke has scored three goals with six assists for nine points and 26 penalty minutes. Rourke signed with the Islanders in August of 2005 and split time between Bridgeport and the Islanders in 2005-06, his first season with organization. In six games with the Islanders last season, he recorded one assist and in 58 games for Bridgeport he recorded nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points and 42 penalty minutes. This will be Rourke's third season in the NHL after he played in 25 games for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2003-04 season, where he recorded a goal, two assists and 22 penalty minutes.
