Long Island native inked to one-year contract
The New York Islanders today announced the signing of Long Island native Peter Ferraro to a one-year contract. Ferraro, 33, is from Sound Beach, Long Island. He brings 11 years of combined American Hockey League and National Hockey League experience to the Islanders’ organization after having been selected in the first round (24th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Rangers.
In 92 career National Hockey League games for the Rangers, Boston, Washington and Pittsburgh, Ferraro has nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points.
The 5-10, 180-pound right wing is tied for second all-time with 238 AHL goals. He has 327 career AHL assists and has compiled 1,087 penalty minutes during stints with Binghamton, Providence, Portland, Springfield and Syracuse. Ferraro is a veteran of 86 AHL playoff games (tied for 22nd all time in playoff games played) and is in the top-15 in three AHL playoff categories – 34 goals (12th), 42 assists (tied for 15th) and 76 points (tied for 12th). He helped Providence win the 1999 Calder Cup, winning the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy for AHL playoff MVP, scoring nine goals and adding 12 assists for 21 points in 19 post-season games.
Ferraro skated in parts of two seasons at the University of Maine and led the Black Bears to the National Championship in his only full season – his freshman year of 1993. He joined the United States National Team and eventually the Olympic squad in 1993-94 and scored six goals in eight games during the Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.
Ferraro played in Germany for the DEG Metro Stars last winter and had 13 goals and 14 assists in 41 games. He was joined in Germany by his twin brother Chris, a member of the Islanders during the 1999-2000 season.
