The Islanders can check Mattias Weinhandl from their restricted free agent list as he has agreed to a two-year contract. The 25-year-old right wing from Sweden is coming off an excellent season in the Swedish Elite League where he finished the 2004-05 season as the league's third leading scorer by going 26-20-46 in 50 games for MoDo. "We're very proud of how Matty has come through the system," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. "We're expecting major contributions from him over the next two seasons." In 2003-04, Weinhandl netted eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 55 games for the Islanders. In his 102 game NHL career, Weinhandl has recorded 14 goals and 29 assists for 43 points. Weinhandl was selected by the Islanders in the third round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. His first season in North America came in 2002-03 when he appeared in 47 games with the Islanders and was selected to play in the NHL Young Star game. The 6-0 and 190-pound Weinhandl started his career with MoDo in 1999-2000. Over the last six years, Weinhandl has spent four with MoDo and has recorded 75 goals and 61 assists for 136 points in 180 games. www.newyorkislanders.com/pressbox/archive.asp?id=389
