The Islanders today confirmed the appointment of Brad Shaw as one of Steve Stirling's three assistant coaches. The hiring was first mentioned by GM Mike Milbury at a luncheon with reporters two weeks ago, and now the deal is officially done. "Brad is one of the top coaching prospects in the game today," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling. "As an NHL defenseman, he was known for his hockey smarts. As a head coach at the American League level, he was widely-respected for having his team prepared and ready to play every night. I'm very pleased that Brad has joined our staff." The 41-year old Shaw was head coach of the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks the last three seasons. In 2004-05 he led Cincinnati to a record of 44-31-4-1. Prior to Cincinnati, Shaw was a head coach with Detroit of the former IHL, an assistant coach with Springfield in the AHL and an NHL assistant with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1999-2000. Shaw made his NHL debut in 1985-86 with the Hartford Whalers and spent eleven of the next 15 seasons as a defenseman around the league. In 377 career games with Hartford, Ottawa, Washington and St. Louis, Shaw recorded 22 goals and 137 assists for 159 points. In 1993-94 Shaw was teammates with a then-rookie center named Alexei Yashin, who led the Senators in scoring that season. The Islanders will formally announce Stirling's other assistants in the next two weeks. www.newyorkislanders.com/pressbox/archive.asp?id=380
