The Islanders have acquired forward Michael York and a conditional draft choice from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for center Michael Peca. York was 16-26-42 in 64 games with Edmonton in 2003-04, and 22-29-51 in 71 games with the Oilers in 2002-03.
"Michael York is a very creative offense player who is only going to become more effective in the new NHL," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. "He also knows New York and the Eastern Conference from his days with the Rangers and is very excited to be joining us. We are really pleased with his acquisition.
"Michael Peca played a vital role in restoring credibility to our franchise," Milbury continued. "I will never forget that, and I'm sure neither will our fans. This was a tough decision, but it provided us flexibility to bring on a first-tier scorer like Miro Satan and pick up an outstanding player like Michael York. I'm confident this is a deal that will work out for everyone."
The 27-year old York broke into the NHL with the Rangers in 1999-00, playing in all 82 games and posting 26 goals and 50 points. Three years later in March of 2002, York was traded to Edmonton and continued to excel north of the border. In his first full season with the Oilers in 2002-03, York posted a career-high 51 points off 22 goals and 29 assists. In 374 career NHL games, York is 98-137-235.
A native of Waterford, Mich., York represented the silver medal-winning Team USA in the 2002 Olympics. Prior to turning pro, York spent four years at Michigan State. At 5-11, 185 pounds, York will be entering his sixth NHL
season in 2005-06.
The 31-year old Peca was acquired in the summer of 2001 from Buffalo for Tim Connolly and Taylor Pyatt. He was named Islanders captain prior to his first season and was instrumental in returning the franchise to the playoffs for the first time since 1994. In 222 games over three seasons with the Islanders, Peca was 49-93-142. Last season Peca was 11-29-40 in 76 games.
In his remarks with reporters after today's activity, Mike Milbury said he does not expect any more major moves from the Islanders during the free agency period. The GM said he would like to add another defenseman, will look at some depth forwards and will also concentrate on the signings of recent first round picks Robert Nilsson and Petteri Nokelainen.
