In last night's game against the Washington Capitals, Islanders forward Kevin Colley suffered a fracture of the fifth cervical vertebrae.
Colley was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital this morning. On Thursday, Chief of Spine Dr. Andrew Hecht will perform surgery to repair and stabilize Colley's cervical spine. No spinal cord damage was suffered.
The entire Islanders family wishes Kevin a full and speedy recovery.

As do I, this is an unfortunate incident and its gonna be tough losing this kid because in my opinion, he had teh most heart and desire on this team and came to play with 110% every single game.

UPDATE
Islanders center Kevin Colley is recovering this afternoon after successful surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. In today's surgery -- the second and final procedure to repair Colley's neck fracture -- Dr. Andrew Hecht and Dr. Arthur Jenkins stabilized Colley's spine from the back.
Colley's halo has been taken off and he is expected to stay in the hospital for another 5-7 days.

No, this time it's not a contest. Islanders forward Kevin Colley should be leaving the hospital in the next few days and we want to let him know how much we are all thinking about him.
So here's your chance to send Kevin your best. We will run some of the emails on the website, but get all of your emails to Kevin.

Kevin Colley made a surprise visit to practice at Islanders Iceworks this afternoon. He was in good spirits, visiting with teammates and staff. Afterwards, he told reporters that his playing career is over.
The 26-year old Colley became an Islander fan favorite for his hard-hitting style. After several years in the minors, he scrapped his way into the NHL, appearing in 16 games this season with the Islanders.
Colley told reporters he feels "blessed that I am able to walk." He said it was difficult to be back at the rink knowing his playing days are over but that he was trying to stay positive and look towards the future.
Islanders general manager Mike Milbury released the following statement this afternoon:
"It's always difficult when the career of someone as special as Kevin Colley comes to a premature end. When you consider that Kevin gave everything he had every time he stepped on the ice, it's especially sad. There's no other word for it.
"The good news is that Kevin is going to lead a healthy and productive life. In the very near future we will have a thorough discussion with Kevin about his life after hockey."
