This fight has a bit of history. These same two teams had played a fight filled game the night before and when a Boston reporter asked MacDermid if he thought this game would be chippy he said "most likely." He also said he wasn't going to go out there and look for a fight, but he would have no problems taking on all comers.
Early in the second period MacDermid comes together with Hamonic and clearly challenges him. Hamonic pays him no mind at first but them shoves him away. MacDermid presses the issue a bit, but when Hamonic skates away, he goes off on a change.
Sitting behind the Islanders bench, I witness Hamonic call over Eric Cairns; who was an assistant coach for this game. Trying not to put words in his mouth, he asked Cairns if he could fight MacDermid. There was a two fight limit in this series and once you hit the limit, you were automatically given a game misconduct. Apparently Cairns gave him the okay because they fought their next shift.
You can see when they line up, that Hamonic is trying to get the jump on the bigger MacDermid. MacDermid throws the first punch over Hamonic's head. They trade punches, MacDermid lefts, and Hamonic rights. The first few punches are off camera so it's hard to tell what lands. Hamonic is ducking his head away from MacDermid's left. MacDermid clearly lands a nice uppercut left that has Hamonic shying away a bit. Hamonic winds up and throws a right that hit's MacDermid.
Looks like momentum knocks Hamonic's helmet off, as MacDermid lands two left's on the back of Hamonic's head. The two move to the Bruins bench and Hamonic throws a vicious right that lands. He throws another, but MacDermid pulls away. MacDermid's jersey comes over his head as he's throwing wild lefts now. Nothing is really landing. The two tie up and the refs get in between them. MacDermid is still throwing punches to the back of Hamonic's head before it's broken up.
I'm calling this a draw because both players landed a big punch and not much else that mattered. MacDermid's six or seven rabbit punches to the back of Hamonic's head doesn't make him a winner in my eyes. Both guys landed a big punch but nothing else did enough damage to warrant a clear winner here.
